And So The Struggle Continues…

As 2022 begins, the legacy of African American history takes center stage in February to recognize Black History Month.  Thoughts of the Reconstruction period from 1865 – 1877 come to mind as a time in which our ancestors, free from the bondage of slavery, sought to stake their claim for equality.  The inevitable backlash in the form of domestic terrorism, Jim Crow and voter suppression that resulted from the Emancipation Proclamation is eerily similar to challenges we face today.

Noted author and a leading political voice at the intersection of Blackness and “queerness,” Keith Boykin has a new book to help us meet this moment.  Often burdened with being the public face of Black gay men in this country, Keith never shies away from being unapologetically honest with his commentary.  I am honored to finally bring brother Keith’s story to the pages of SWERV.

Also, in this special issue we introduce another batch of Extraordinary People in our community. This group of accomplished individuals covers a broad spectrum, from education, journalism, and social justice to the arts and fashion.  My goal is to always celebrate the greatness among us.

Together we can make a difference!
