HAPPY HOLIDAYS – 2020 STYLE

Coronavirus be damned, I need some turkey with gravy, macaroni and cheese, greens, yams, and lots of apple and sweet potato pie. Perhaps some fun-filled time with my beautiful family. Hell, I would even welcome a little snow. Just a little.

Thus far, 2020 has been a year full of challenges. We are still very much in the midst of battling a global pandemic that shows no signs of letting up. The country will have survived a contentious election season to select the leader of the free world. And Black folks in this country continue to remain resilient in the face of institutional systemic racism.  I’m ready for it all to end. WE NEED A HOLIDAY!

But we must not let our guard down. The virus does not care that Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Kwanzaa are forthcoming. Our elected officials should not feel unburdened to address the needs of their constituents.  And the world must never stop recognizing that #BLACKLIVESMATTER.

Beloved, don’t skip the holiday celebrations but please be safe and smart. Think of Zooming those holiday gatherings this year.  A new year (2021) is coming and we need to be ready.

Together we can make a difference,

Jamil A. Fletcher
